Known as the UK’s “second city,” Birmingham is a popular choice for people to buy. We’d say more so outside the city centre, but if you love city vibes, then it’s an excellent place to be.

With a big airport offering flights to pretty much everywhere, a well-connected railway network, the massive Grand Central Station with trains to every city, and an endless list of job opportunities, it’s pretty much the perfect city.

The average house sale over the last 12 months was £246,114 for a detached house and flats for £147,103; we think it’s the perfect place for people to come and live.

Digbeth and the Jewellery Quarter

Digbeth and the Jewellery Quarter are our top places to live in Birmingham.

They’re technically just outside the city centre and both have incredible atmospheres. From bustling nightlife to incredible bistro restaurants, you’ll find something you love in Digbeth or the Jewellery Quarter – and we’re not even talking about the houses yet.

In Digbeth, the average property prices is about £150,000, but average prices are expected to surge in the next few years due to increased demand.

The Jewellery Quarter is a thriving creative business centre with art galleries, a modern British kitchen, and all kinds of restaurants and shops. House prices are a little higher at around £200,000, but the name and the ongoing reconstruction of the area guarantee the safety of the investment and growth of profits.

Moseley and Edgbaston

Moseley and Edgbaston are also excellent places to live.

Moseley is a family-friendly area with a village theme and an active area. The municipality has an award-winning farmers market, beautiful parks, and an incredible food culture. You will pay more for semi-detached houses here with prices sitting at a little over £400,000, but it’s a low-rise residential area with easy access to the city centre, which promises tranquillity. 

Or you can find a bargain that needs some work and fix it up and call it an investment. A fixer-upper needing minor work like architraves and skirting or floors and plastering will be markedly less in total cost and maybe a better investment,

Edgbaston is also great if you want to live near Birmingham universities and great schools. You’ll find stunning Victorian houses, plenty of trees, Edgbaston Cricket Ground, and great restaurants with Michelin stars. Expect to pay out roughly £300,000 for a detached house here.

Erdington and Perry Barr

People looking for cost-effective solutions and high rental yields should look at Erdington and Perry Barr.

Erdington is a well-connected area, just a 15-minute train ride from the city centre. It has a shopping high street, schools, and beautiful green spaces, making it ideal for families and young professionals. At the average house value of about £160,000, Erdington is a great catch, especially for those who want to invest in Birmingham’s rental property market without paying a fortune.

We also wouldn’t overlook Perry Barr. The area has actually changed for the better due to the work that went into preparing it for the 2022 Commonwealth Games—infrastructure, transport links, and local amenities all benefited from improvements that were made. Considering that further improvements are planned and implemented with the Perry Bar 2040 promise, property prices will have to go up, so this one is perfect for early-born investors. 

Average prices in Perry Barr are around £200,000, which means that it is quite reasonable for investors, and it also has the potential for appreciation.

You wouldn’t regret living in Birmingham—either in the centre or just outside the city centre. It’s a lively city with great things to do year-round and excellent travel network connections. And with favourable prices, we don’t see why now isn’t a great time to find a home in Birmingham.
