Running a pub is about more than serving pints and pulling in customers. In a competitive market, you need to give people a reason to choose your establishment over the dozens of others on offer.

Whether you’re in a bustling city or a quaint village, the challenge is the same: standing out. Here’s how to make that happen.

Curate unique events and themed nights

Putting a creative spin on your events can make your pub memorable. Consider your clientele’s preferences and demographics. Make sure to plan well in advance and market effectively. Use your existing space creatively.

A small venue might benefit from intimate gatherings like a wine-tasting evening or an open-mic night, while a larger one could host mini-festivals or charity events. These will help bring in the regulars while attracting new customers who might turn into loyal visitors.

Leverage social media and digital presence

If your pub isn’t online, you’re already behind. Social media isn’t just a platform to post promotions; it’s a way to engage with your audience directly.

Start by creating accounts on platforms like Instagram, Facebook and even TikTok, depending on where your audience spends their time. Post high-quality photos of your food, drinks and events. Videos showcasing a lively atmosphere or bartender tricks can work wonders.

Encourage people to share their experiences online by offering incentives like discounts for tagging your pub in posts or leaving a review. Monitor your reviews on platforms like Google and TripAdvisor, responding promptly and professionally to both praise and criticism.

Consider creating a simple but appealing website where customers can find your menu, upcoming events and contact details. A well-maintained online presence builds credibility and keeps your establishment fresh in people’s minds.

Offer a distinctive menu with local produce

A great menu goes beyond standard pub grub. Stand out by offering a mix of classics and creative dishes. Work with local farmers and producers to source fresh ingredients.

For example, instead of generic burgers, use locally sourced beef, bake the buns in-house and serve them with seasonal sides.

Consider diversifying your drinks menu as well. Craft beer and cocktails are increasingly popular, while a rotating selection of local ales can attract beer enthusiasts.

Cater to dietary preferences, offering vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options that taste just as good as traditional dishes. Highlight these features on your menu and social media to appeal to a broader audience.

Enhance ambience with thoughtful interior design

The atmosphere of your pub is just as important as what you serve. Invest in comfortable seating, soft lighting and decor that reflects your pub’s character.

Whether you’re going for a modern vibe or a cosy traditional look, the details matter. A cohesive theme can make your pub feel unique and inviting.

Don’t forget practicalities like cleanliness and well-maintained facilities. Pub insurance could protect your business from potential mishaps, whether it’s a broken piece of equipment or an accident during a busy event.

Create spaces for different groups, from quiet corners for couples to larger areas for group gatherings. Thoughtful design encourages customers to linger longer and spend more.
