Are Rollable Phones Going to Hit the Market in the Near Future?

A rollable phone has a hinge, alongside a display that is capable of bending at a specific point. With Motorola mentioning a concept device in 2023, and Tecno bringing us one step closer to a rollable phone with the demo of the Phantom Ultimate, it may be that rollable phones aren’t that distant in the future.

Bigger Screens are Driving Rollable Phones

Even though rollable phones certainly look good, one of the most compelling concepts behind them is the fact that they can expand your screen, right when you need it the most. If you are a professional, then having a bigger screen can dramatically improve your productivity.

Whether you are reviewing spreadsheets or even having multiple apps run side by side, having a bigger screen is useful. Rollable phones could also become the ultimate entertainment device. Gamers will be able to capitalize on the expanded field of view, which will really benefit games with complex interfaces.

Even simple games like slot games and casino titles stand to benefit from tech like this, too. Megaway casino games, for example, tend to have bonus rounds and slot reels, with different symbols shown on the screen at any one time. With that said, having a bigger screen could mean that graphics are expanded, improving the experience while making it more immersive. Streaming is another sector that stands to benefit from rollable phones.

If a phone were able to expand to a near-tablet-size display, then this would provide a more cinematic experience when watching movies and when watching downloadable content. When you break it all down, it’s clear that rollable phones could become a do-it-all smartphone, which packs down when you don’t need it, and expands when you do.

Is Samsung Leading the Charge with Rollable Phones?

It has been speculated that Samsung is working on a rollable phone right now with a whopping 12.4-inch display. With Huawei recently releasing its triple-display foldable device, and with Motorola and OnePlus also expressing significant interest in expanding into the foldable market, it may mean that rollable phones are going to be hitting the market very soon. With what we know, Samsung is going to be leading the charge, especially with commercial rollouts.

We also know that there have been several prototypes released, and so far, they look very much like normal phones. With that said, when you click a button, the phone transforms by becoming a full extension of the normal display. There is no need to have a secondary cover screen, as the primary screen simply expands when you click on the button.  So far, we do know that the device gets wider rather than taller or bigger all around. This makes the phone look very much like a tablet. With rollable phones offering so much potential and with companies like Samsung leading the way as pioneers within the sector, it’s certainly interesting to see what the future looks like for rollable phones and whether or not they’re going to take off in 2026.
