Early Life and Background
Gabriel Imuetinyan Agbonlahor was born in 1986 to a Nigerian father and Scottish mother. Following a mutual separation by his parents, Agbonlahor was brought up by his father in Birmingham. Growing up in the West Midlands, he grew to develop a great passion for soccer and while playing for his district, he was scouted by Aston Villa.
His first drafting was to the youth academy where he had to work hard to earn a place in the senior team. Agbonlahor was given a professional contract for two years at the club in 2005, but was immediately loaned out to Watford to gain experience. At the Championship club, Watford, he managed two appearances before he was loaned out to Sheffield Wednesday. His move to the division side added more caps to his career as he made eight appearances before his much-awaited return to Villa Park.
At age 19, his first Premier League debut was accomplished as he featured in Manager David O’Leary squad against Everton. The team’s senior strikers were injury-plagued at the time and Agbonlahor was selected to make up the numbers. Although Everton won the match 4-1, the young striker, Agbonlahor didn’t disappoint, scoring after 63 minutes of play.
Rising Through the Ranks
Agbonlahor quickly became one of the most exciting players at Aston Villa. His pace and strength made him difficult for defenders to handle and as expected, he scored many important goals for the team.
His ability to score in local derbies like fixtures against Birmingham City and still show up in big games, made him a fan favorite. Matches like the one against 2006/2007 Premiership champions, Chelsea comes to mind where his goal earned Villa a 1-1 draw. There is also the cup heroic feat he pulled by scoring an injury-time goal to walk past Leicester City in 2006.
His goal rush stretched to more teams including the Big Four after he scored against Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United. Villa lost 3-1 in that game at Old Trafford, but Agbonlahor got well-deserved attention. In Sir Alex Ferguson’s words, “Speed is one thing, but pace with purpose is what makes Agbonlahor a real threat.”
His Breakthrough and International Career
Following his goal-scoring prowess and commitment to the team, Aston Villa provided him with a contract extension on 15th August, 2008. Agbonlahor signed this four-year deal to keep him at the club till 2012 and sealed it with a hat-trick two days after. The hat-trick was in Villa’s opening match against Manchester City and to-date is the third-fastest in Premier League history.
Notably, this was a great start to the season for Agbonlahor, and it went on to become his most successful. For starters, he won the 2008 Aston Villa Player of the Year honor for his contributions, earning him more respect from fans and opposing players. This was a big win compared to his Premier League Player of the Month for November, 2007.
Also, that same year, 2008, he was called up to the England National team under Fabio Capello. Being of both Nigerian and Scottish origin, Agbonlahor could easily play for either National teams and was even called once for Nigeria. However, he chose to play for the land of his birth and waited for his time. England eventually did send an invitation, but he couldn’t play due to a hamstring injury, but did well to cement his place against Germany.
Former England captain, John Terry, praised Agbonlahor by saying, “Gabby had everything – speed, strength, and an eye for goal. A nightmare to play against.”
This praise was regardless of the fact that Agbonlahor didn’t score in any of his senior international appearances. However, he has four goals to his name during his time in the England U21 and was part of the 2009 UEFA Under-21 Championship runner-up team.
Some of his notable achievements include:
- FA CUP runner-up: 2014-15
- League Cup runner-up: 2009-10
- Premier League Player of the Month: November 2007
- UEFA Under-21 Championship runner-up: 2009
- Club Captain 2015/2016
- Third-fastest hat-trick in PL history
- Aston Villa top goalscorer of all time (87)
Challenges Faced: The Gradual End of an Era
In all of the years Agbonlahor spent in Villa Park, there was not a season he didn’t score a goal. However, like many prolific footballers, the England-forward faced an upturn in luck as he got older. He started having it rough from the 2012/2013 season and gradually declined in performance til 2017 when he officially played his last game.
Among other things, injuries and changes in the team’s playing style slowed him down and by the time Aston Villa was relegated from the Premier League in 2016, Agbonlahor’s role had changed. He was no longer the team’s leading forward, but his contribution over the years had already secured his place in the club’s history.
No doubt, Agbonlahor is a role model young players can look up to. He remains one of Aston Villa’s greatest players and will always be remembered on the books of Aston Villa all time top scorers.
