Do you want to explore new places but have limited time? A weekend getaway might be the answer.

There are many gorgeous cities in Europe, and each offers a distinct experience. You can pick one and embark on an unforgettable trip. Cannot decide? We’ve got you covered. In this article, you can find ten European cities you can discover on a weekend.

    1. Vienna, Austria

The capital of Austria, Vienna, is a historical city with a glorious past and a vibrant culture. Each part of the city is home to numerous historical landmarks and spectacular structures, from historical palaces that once housed the imperial family of Austria to residential complexes adorned with stunning murals.

Vienna is a true capital of art and culture. The city is home to many museums and art galleries, where you can see the awe-inspiring art of great masters. The Museum of Art History, Albertina, Leopold Museum and House of Music are some places you can visit to make the most of your trip.

Since it’s a popular destination, you can easily find the cheapest flights to Vienna. This way, you can spend less on transportation and more on the trip.

    2. Istanbul, Turkey

As the former capital of three empires and a crossroads of civilizations, Istanbul is a city of unique culture and profound history. Thanks to its rich past, Istanbul has a myriad of attractions and experiences to offer. Of course, with careful planning, Istanbul can be a great destination for a short weekend trip.

The Old Town area, Fatih, is where most of the landmarks are located. So, you can visit all the major attractions on the first day and spend the second day enjoying the culture. Having dinner at a local restaurant and watching the Bosporus is a must-do for having the true Istanbul experience. You can also visit a Turkish bath to relax and recharge before your departure.

    3. Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is a dream-like city with its distinctive architectural tradition and a myriad of historical landmarks. Once you arrive at the city, you will feel a certain familiarity and nostalgia; this is the signature atmosphere of Budapest.

Wander through the charming streets of Budapest, where a new landmark awaits around every corner. Don’t forget to visit the famous Dohány Street Synagogue to uncover the lives of Hungarian Jews and the effects of the Holocaust. The Hungarian Parliament, Fisherman’s Bastion, Church of Saint Elizabeth, and the entirety of the Old Town are also worth visiting.

Besides its landmarks and attractions, Budapest is also such a foodie capital. Considering that the Hungarian cuisine influenced the continental European cuisine deeply, you can expect to find a wide variety of dishes here. Try popular street food, like langos or kürtőskalács, and find a local restaurant to enjoy traditional Hungarian dishes.

    4. Prague, Czechia

Prague is another great destination for a short but unforgettable getaway. Known for its picturesque streets and gorgeous historical landmarks, Prague might be among the most famous European cities.

Despite a myriad of attractions, Prague is a relatively small city, making it the perfect choice for a weekend. You can easily see all the major spots, such as the Prague Astronomical Clock, Charles Bridge, Powder Tower, Dancing House, and Prague Castle.

Besides sightseeing, you can also embark on a foodie adventure in Prague. Czech cuisine is very rich, with tasty sweets and delicious pastries standing out. You can also hit some Prague pubs to try the local beer, which is world class.

    5. Bratislava, Slovakia

Despite being overshadowed by other European capitals, Bratislava is one of the best places for a weekend getaway. Although the city is quite small, the architecture and historical heritage can be seen at every corner.

The major attraction in Slovakia is the historic castle, situated on the hill dominating the city. There are several churches and historic buildings in the city’s Old Town area that are worth seeing. Along the Danube River are many restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy authentic dishes and bask in the stunning scenery.

One of Bratislava’s biggest advantages is its proximity to other major cities, particularly Vienna. So, you can easily travel to other destinations on a day trip from Bratislava, making the best of your weekend trip.

    6. Ljubljana, Slovenia

Ljubljana is a small yet gorgeous city with a lot to offer. Sprawling along the River Ljubljanica, this colourful European capital boasts a very vibrant atmosphere.

Statues and sculptures are everywhere in Ljubljana, from bridges to squares. This makes it much easier to bask in the city’s artistic aura and immerse in the magical moment.

The major attraction of Ljubljana is the Ljubljana Castle, a steep fortress that you can access via either walking or taking the funicular. There are various exhibitions in the castle, as well as reenactors demonstrating the historical way of life in the Ljubljana Castle.

    7. Zakopane, Poland

If you’re tired of the hustle and bustle of big cities and looking for a more peaceful escape, Zakopane might be the perfect destination for you. A popular resort town, Zakopane is known for its breath-taking landscape and winter sports scene.

In Zakopane, you can enjoy the serene atmosphere of the Polish countryside and try out some new activities. This short trip might help you relax and recharge, as well as fill up your phone’s gallery with stunning pictures.

    8. Munich, Germany

Munich is among the most popular travel destinations in Germany. The city is the capital of the State of Bavaria and home to many historic buildings. Neues Rathaus, Frauenkirche, Alter Hof, and Viktualienmarkt are some of the must-see attractions in Munich.

The annual Oktoberfest, the biggest beer festival in the world, is the signature event of Munich. This festival is celebrated from September 20th to October 5th with a massive turnout. Don’t miss out on this event if you’re in Munich around that time!

    9. Geneva, Switzerland

Geneva is known for its spectacular views of Lake Geneva, contemporary skyline, and status as a global hub of democracy. The city is home to many UN offices and international organizations, adding to the city’s vibrant culture.

If you’re interested in history, Geneva’s museums offer you a spectacular glimpse of world history. Plus, as a European capital of art, Geneva houses a myriad of art galleries, where you can explore different aspects of modern and classical art.

Geneva boasts many world-renowned restaurants thanks to its international atmosphere. Besides restaurants serving traditional Swiss food, there are many offering international dishes.

    10. Venice, Italy

Venice is a magical city with countless canals, vivid houses, and a distinctive atmosphere. Established on an archipelago of over 100 islands on the Adriatic Sea, the city, with its well-preserved historic character, resembles an open-air museum.

There are many landmarks and hidden gems throughout Venice, allowing you to spend every second of your trip discovering new places. Wandering along Venice’s narrow streets is the best way to explore the city. For an authentic Venetian experience, however, a gondola ride down the canal is a must.

Like any other Italian city, Venice boasts a rich culinary tradition and world-renowned restaurants. If you want to try some of the best food in the world, these establishments will get you covered.
