How to Maintain Your Bike Chain – A Step-by-Step Guide

The bike chain is an essential part of your bicycle’s riding system. It transfers force from the pedals to the wheels, allowing you to drive forward. No matter which Bobbin Bikes you’re riding, over time, dirt, filth, and moisture can develop on the chain, causing wear and strain. A well-maintained chain ensures smoother gear shifts lowers the chance of chain damage, and extends the life of other drivetrain components. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process of maintaining your bike chain, helping you keep your ride in top performance.

Step 1: Gather all the Equipment

Before you begin, gather the necessary tools and supplies: a clean rag or cloth for wiping, chain cleaner or degreaser to remove grime, a brush or old toothbrush for scrubbing, chain lubricant suitable for your riding conditions to ensure smooth operation, and optionally, gloves to keep your hands clean.

    Step 2: Check the Chain

Begin by checking the chain for indications of wear and damage. Look for corrosion, stiff links, or overstretching. If the chain is significantly worn, it may be time to replace it. Regular inspections of your bike chain allow you to detect problems early on, preventing them from becoming more serious.

    Step 3: Clean the Chain

Shift your bike to the smallest chainring and cog to make the chain easier to access. After that, apply a generous amount of chain cleaner or degreaser to the chain. Make sure to cover the entire length of the chain, not only the parts that are exposed.

For cleaning, use a brush or an old toothbrush to thoroughly clean the chain. Pay close attention to the linkages and rollers. This procedure removes dirt and filth that might affect wear. When you’re finished, wipe the chain with a clean towel or cloth to remove any dislodged dirt and cleanser.

    Step 4: Lubricate the Chain

After cleaning, it’s time to lubricate your bike chain. Choose a chain lubricant that best matches your riding circumstances. Wet, dry, and mixed conditions all require various lubricants. Your kid’s BMX bike may have different needs from an adult’s city bike, for instance, so select wisely.

Apply a drop of lubricant to each link of the chain while slowly turning the pedals backward. Ensure even coverage across the entire chain. Be careful as excess lubrication might attract dirt and undermine your cleaning efforts, so wipe any excess away with a clean cloth.

    Step 5: Check Chain Tension

After you finish all the steps and before you jump back into your bike seat, check the chain tension. Proper chain tension is essential for smooth cycling. If the chain is excessively slack, it might skip or fall off. If it is overly tight, it might result in excessive wear. To check the tension, press down on the chain halfway between the front and back sprocket. There should be a minor movement of around a half inch. Adjust the tension as needed by releasing or tightening the rear axle bolts.

To keep both adult and kids’ bikes in optimal condition, maintain your bike chains regularly. Depending on your riding frequency and conditions, clean and lubricate the chain every few weeks or after particularly muddy or wet rides.
