Relationships can be challenging and every couple goes through ups and downs but how can you tell whether you’re experiencing a temporary rocky patch or deeper issues? While it’s not always easy to recognise the signs that your marriage needs extra attention, there are some red flags you might want to watch out for so you can address any concerns before they become a major problem.

We’ll explore these common signs and offer practical tips to help you tackle any issues at an early stage.

    Constant and unresolved conflicts

Every couple has disagreements and faces some form of conflict at various stages in their marriage. But if these conflicts are becoming the norm and most of them end up being left unresolved, there might be a bigger problem at play.

Communication is key as the longer you allow a conflict to fester, the worse it’s likely to become. It’s important to allow each other to express your needs and feelings, especially around things you don’t agree on. It’s not about persuading the other person to surrender, it’s about understanding and accepting that sometimes, you won’t always have the same opinion.

    Emotional and physical distance

Physical distance can occur in a marriage for many reasons such as one partner working away but this doesn’t necessarily lead to trouble, as long as you’re both accepting of the situation.

Emotional distance can cause greater harm and can end up in feelings of loneliness and isolation if not addressed. This can be caused by a lack of communication, respect and intimateness.

If you’re feeling unsupported in your relationship or sidelined for other priorities such as children, work or hobbies, start by carving out some time for just the two of you. Have conversations about each other’s goals and shared interests to reestablish a connection. Small steps like this can help bridge the emotional gap and ensure you both feel heard.

    Broken trust

Whether due to infidelity, broken promises or unresolved conflict, dealing with trust issues in a marriage is not easy. Rebuilding trust takes time and you both have to want your relationship to work. This means open and honest communication and allowing your partner time to deal with any feelings that arise.

If you’re struggling with a lack of trust you might want to try relationship counselling to work through the issues.

No shared vision for the future

If you both have completely different ideas on how your future together looks then this can be a red flag. Happy marriages involved having shared goals, as well as allowing each other to pursue individual ones.

Problems can arise when one of you wants to travel the world, but the other one wants to settle down with a family, for example. If one of you has wildly different dreams to the other, it’s important to address this.

While many couples can reach a compromise when it comes to future aspirations, for some, it signals a major turning point. In this situation, couples might choose to separate. An online divorce can be a straightforward process that’s tailored to your individual situation.

Finally, it’s important to remember the reasons you were attracted to each other in the first place. Life has a tendency to get in the way but by reconnecting and rediscovering each other, you might just find that your marriage gets back on track.
