Scottie Scheffler and His Meteoric Rise to the Top of World Golf

Every professional sport has an athlete or player who explodes onto the scene and takes the game by storm. Scottie Scheffler is such a person. Scheffler is still only 27 years old, but there is already talk of him being one of the greatest golfers ever to pick up a set of clubs. His rise to the top of golf’s world rankings has been nothing short of phenomenal.

Scheffler turned professional as recently as 2018 and climbed to the top of the world golf rankings in March 2022. The American star held the number-one ranking for over 90 weeks and is always the favorite with online sports betting sites offering golf bets, including for the upcoming Open Championship in July. Keep reading to learn more about the golf legend in the making.

    Scottie Scheffler’s Early Years

Born in June 1996, Scheffler was the only boy among three sisters. The Schefflers resided in Ridgewood, New Jersey, but relocated to Dallas, Texas, in the wake of the September 11 attacks. After moving to Texas, the young Scheffler received tutelage from Randy Smith, a top instructor who had coached Justin Leonard to victory at The Open Championship in 1997.

Scheffler was a natural with a golf club in hand and had unfathomable success on the PGA junior circuit, winning 75 times. Those around Scheffler knew he was destined for stardom on golf’s biggest stage.

He played collegiate golf at the University of Texas from 2014 to 2018. Despite studying for and graduating with a bachelor’s degree in finance, Scheffler had his sights set on playing golf professionally. He achieved that goal in 2018.

    Scott Scheffler’s Professional Career

After two victories on the Korn Ferry Tour and a Korn Ferry Tour Player of the Year trophy, Scheffler earned a fully exempt PGA Tour card for the 2020 season. In his first PGA Championship in early August 2020, Scheffler tied for fourth and banked $528,000 in prize money. Two weeks later, he shot a 12-under 59 at The Northern Trust, the second-lowest round in PGA Tour history.

Scheffler helped the U.S. team win the 2021 Ryder Cup and went into the 2022 season full of confidence. In February 2022, Scheffler won his first PGA Tour title at the WM Phoenix Open. Only three weeks later, Scheffler emerged victoriously in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The leaderboard points he earned for those victories propelled him to the top of the world golf rankings; he has held the number-one spot ever since.

Also in 2022, Scheffler finished runner-up in the Charles Schwab Challenge and tied for second at the U.S. Open and in the Tour Championship. He ended the 2022 season with the PGA Tour Player of the Year title and just over $14 million in winnings.

Scheffler’s incredible form continued into 2023, winning The Players Championship, finishing second in The Masters, and ending the year with more than $21 million in earnings, enough to top the money list for the second year running.

In March 2024, the New Jersey native won the Arnold Palmer Invitational for the second time, became the first-ever player to win back-to-back The Players Championships, and finished second in the Houston Open in his first three tournaments.

April saw him become the Masters Tournament champion for a second time and win the RBC Heritage before claiming his fifth PGA Tour win of the year in the Memorial Tournament. Scheffler has already won $24 million this year, breaking the PGA Tour season earnings record with six months of the year remaining.

To date, Scheffler has competed in 124 PGA Tour events, made the cut in 105 of them, won 11 titles, and finished second or third 19 times. His earnings are $66,589,782, ranking him fifth in golf’s all-time money list.

    Scottie Scheffler’s Personal Life

Scheffler is married and has one child, a son named Bennett. He met Meredith Scudder in high school, and they married in 2020. Scheffler has often praised his wife for believing in him and helping him handle the pressure of being a superstar.

In May 2024, Scheffler was involved in “a big misunderstanding” that resulted in police arresting him. Police initially laid several charges at Scheffler, including second-degree assault of a police officer. However, all charges were subsequently dropped.

The incident occurred near Valhalla Golf Club, the venue of the 2024 PGA Championship. An unfortunate traffic accident had happened outside where someone lost their life, although Scheffler was not involved. Traffic backed up for miles around, and Scheffler was due to play a round. He drove through stop signs and made his way to the course, only for a police officer to try to prevent him from doing so. A minor scuffle ensued, and the police officer fell to the ground, injuring their wrist and knee.

What Makes Scheffler So Good At Golf?

Scheffler is a natural talent on the golf course, but he also puts in countless hours perfecting his swing and the many different shots needed to succeed. Golf experts have frequently stated that Scheffler rarely makes mistakes during his rounds and seems to thrive under pressure in situations where some of his rivals wilt. In short, he is the all-around package, the perfect golfer.

    Scott Scheffler’s Net Worth

Putting an accurate figure on a person’s net worth is challenging, especially in professional sports like golf, where players are not tied to contracts and are free to negotiate endorsement deals away from the course.

Forbes recently placed a $61 million estimate on Scheffler’s net worth, which seems accurate. He has more than $66 million in career earnings but has spent significant sums on homes for his family and investing in the Texas Ranchers pickleball team.

Scheffler’s endorsement deals are believed to earn him approximately $20 million annually. His sponsors include NetJets, Nike, Rolex, TaylorMade, and Veritex Community Bank. The value of those endorsement deals could rise astronomically because Scheffler is the most marketable golf player since the legendary Tiger Woods was in his heyday.
