    Helpful Tips to Stay Warm and Healthy During Winter

    Winter is a difficult season for everyone, but more especially for people at higher risk of falling sick when there’s too much cold. However, whether you fall sick more often in winter or not, keeping warm and healthy is vital. Moreover, no matter how healthy you think you are, there is such a thing as ‘too much cold.’ Therefore, here is a guide for everyone on how to keep warm and stay protected in this very cold weather.

    Warm Your Body

    One of the ways to protect your body from getting negatively impacted by the cold is by keeping it warm, even while playing games on this website. Particularly, if you have any health condition, such as heart conditions and asthma, the risks are much higher. That means you need to take extra precautions to ensure your body temperature is kept at 37oC at all times. More specifically, here are things you can do to keep your body at a healthy temperature in winter:

    • Put on the warmest indoor clothing you can find; many layers of clothes is better than just one thick sweater.
    • Drink hot fluids throughout the day and avoid alcohol as it promotes the loss of body heat.
    • Avoid sitting in one place for too long; be as active as possible to boost your circulation and body warmth.

    Warm Your Hands and Feet

    Apart from keeping your body, pay special attention to your hands and feet; they get the most affected. Here’s how it works: when the weather becomes cold, your body is more particular about keeping your vital organs warm. As a result, other not-so-vital organs like the hands and feet are neglected, and they start to get cold. Therefore, it is up to you to keep them covered and snug; this keeps them warm and also helps to regulate your body temperature.

    To keep your feet warm, wear thick socks and slippers indoors and warm socks and waterproof shoes outside. To keep your hands warm, wear gloves made of wool or other insulating materials and invest in a hand warmer.

    Warm Your House

    One of the things to keep warm in winter for your health and warmth is your house. If you’re worried about the cost, you should know that there are cost-effective ways of keeping your home warm. For example, keep your curtains open when the sun is out and close them as soon as it sets. While the curtain was open, the sun provided warmth, and by closing it immediately, the sun kept the warm air in.

    Furthermore, get thick curtains or thermal curtain liners to ensure the heat that enters your house stays in. Meanwhile, your windows and doors are still there, and heat escapes pretty fast through them. You can fix that by using homemade draught excluders for your doors and lining your windows with rubber seals. Also, move your furniture closer to an internal wall, put plenty of rugs on your floor, and avoid condensation on your windows.

    In addition, if you have heating appliances, ensure you service them regularly and keep them working efficiently. Also, invest in insulation for your water pipes to keep them from freezing and ensure only warm water comes out.

    Take Extra Caution at Night

    Keeping warm at night is more difficult and yet more important because that is when the cold worsens. Therefore, as you keep your house warm during the day, you should take extra precautions for the night. Here are tips to help you keep warm at night during the winter season:

    • Exclude draughts, close your windows, and put rugs on your floors;
    • Buy fleece or flannel bedding or use extra blankets; they are excellent insulators and protectors against extreme cold;
    • If you cannot afford a heater, try getting weighted or electric blankets; they are much cheaper than heaters. Apart from being more cost-effective, electric blankets provide constant heat throughout the night, while weighted blankets keep drafty air away from your bed.
    • Keep a hot water bottle close by throughout the night; it will provide a safe source of warmth as you sleep.

    Exercise

    One of the best and most cost-effective ways to stay warm during winter is by staying active as much as possible. Meanwhile, ‘staying active’ does not necessarily mean high-impact aerobic exercises that leave you breathless. If you can go for that, awesome; if not, walking works just as excellent. You don’t even have to go to a gym; you can stay at home and catch up on those long-overdue household chores.

    Conclusion

    Protecting yourself from the adverse effects of cold in winter is ultimately up to you. You can take steps to protect yourself as well as others around you from the risks of exposure to cold. That may include getting vaccinated to reduce the risks of respiratory illnesses and treating minor water ailments like sore throats promptly. When you’re proactive about your health, especially in winter, you promote healthy living for both yourself and others around you.
