Nestled amidst the vast Gerudo Desert in the Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom lies Gerudo Town, a vibrant community shrouded in mystery.

This exclusively female settlement is a crucial stop on Link’s adventure, offering not only refuge from the harsh environment but also a glimpse into a unique Gerudo culture. Packed with shops, secrets, and a hidden shelter, Gerudo Town is anything but a simple desert outpost.

Finding Gerudo Town: A Sandy Labyrinth

Reaching Gerudo Town in Tears of the Kingdom is no easy feat. The entire Gerudo Desert is engulfed by a colossal sandstorm, obscuring the path and making navigation a challenge.

Consulting your Purah Pad and utilizing landmarks like the Skyview Tower and Kara Kara Bazaar can help you find your way.

However, upon arrival, you’ll discover that Gerudo Town itself seems deserted. This is because the Gerudo people, anticipating the sandstorm, have taken shelter in a cleverly hidden location beneath the town’s central palace.

Unveiling the Secrets: Entering the Gerudo Shelter

The entrance to the Gerudo Shelter lies beneath the main building in the town square, marked by flaming torches and descending steps. Here, you’ll find Reeza, a Gerudo guard who initially denies you entry due to your male (voe) status. But fear not, there’s a way around this obstacle!

The key to entering Gerudo Town lies in completing the “Forbidden City Entry” quest. This quest involves acquiring the Gerudo Set, a special outfit that allows Link to disguise himself as a Gerudo woman (vai). With this disguise in place, Reeza will grant you access to the hidden shelter.

A Bustling Oasis Beneath the Sand: Life in the Gerudo Shelter

The Gerudo Shelter is a marvel of Gerudo ingenuity. Carved beneath the town itself, it provides a cool and protected haven from the raging sandstorm above. Here, you’ll find the true heart of Gerudo Town bustling with activity. Shops line the walkways, offering a diverse range of wares, while Gerudo women go about their daily lives.

Here’s a glimpse of what awaits you within the Gerudo Shelter:

    Thriving Shops:

The Gerudo are known for their entrepreneurial spirit, and the shelter boasts a variety of shops catering to all your adventuring needs. You can find general stores selling essential supplies, a canteen for a quick bite, a fashion boutique for stylish Gerudo clothing, an arrow specialty shop to stock up on ammunition, and even a jewelry store for those looking for a touch of desert bling. For the more adventurous shopper, there’s even a black-market armor vendor offering unique (and possibly illicit) gear.

    Sand Seal Rentals:

Exploring the vast Gerudo Desert is no easy feat on foot. Thankfully, the Gerudo Shelter offers sand seal rentals. These nimble creatures are perfectly adapted for traversing the dunes and a fantastic way to get around quickly.

    The All-Important Spring:

Water is a precious commodity in the desert, and Gerudo Town cleverly utilizes an elevated spring within the shelter, showcasing the importance of this life-giving resource in Gerudo culture.

    Guardian Statue:

Standing guard at the entrance of the shelter is a deactivated Guardian Statue. These ancient automatons, remnants of a bygone era, often hold secrets and may play a role in your exploration of the Gerudo Desert.

Beyond the Shelter: Quests and Secrets of Gerudo Town

While the Gerudo Shelter offers a safe haven, the true adventure lies in exploring Gerudo Town itself once the sandstorm subsides. Here’s what awaits you above ground:

    • The Riju of Gerudo Town Main Quest: A crucial quest in Tears of the Kingdom involves assisting Riju, the young chief of the Gerudo. Helping Riju quell the sandstorm is not only essential for the well-being of Gerudo Town but also unlocks access to various areas and allows you to fully explore the town above ground.
    • Side Quests and Adventures: Once the sandstorm is dealt with, numerous side quests and adventures become available within Gerudo Town. These quests offer opportunities to learn more about Gerudo culture, earn rewards, and delve deeper into the lore of the game.
    • A Vibrant Town Above Ground: Gerudo Town boasts a unique architectural style that reflects its desert environment. Expect to find intricately carved buildings, shaded walkways, and a central square that comes alive once the sandstorm is a thing of the past.

Gerudo Culture: A Society of Strong Women

Intrigue from the Dunes: The Gerudo, veiled in the mysteries of the desert, stand as one of the most captivating races in the Legend of Zelda universe.. Here are some key aspects of their culture that shape Gerudo Town:

Exclusively Female: Gerudo women are known for their strength, independence, and resourcefulness. They are skilled warriors, adept traders, and have built a thriving society in the harsh desert environment. The exact reason behind the all-female Gerudo population remains shrouded in mystery, adding to the intrigue of this race.

Leadership and Hierarchy: Gerudo Town is led by a chief, a position traditionally held by a strong and respected woman. In Tears of the Kingdom, the young and resourceful Riju takes on this mantle.
