Esports have taken off in the past decades, drawing fans together in unbridled fandom and passion for the games. League of Legends remains one of the most popular games, with top LoL eSports teams clamouring to win Summoner Cups annually. The 2024 season is well underway, and with the regional split rounding up, fans and teams are gearing up for the World Championships. There’s no telling what teams would make it to the finals this year, but we can reminisce on the past glory of the most popular pro teams in the league. We hope all our favourites will feature in this year’s final, so let’s refresh our memories of their accomplishments.
T1
Previously known as SK Telecom T1, the undisputed kings of LoL tops our list. Ordinarily, winning a World Championship is a big deal. Yet, this South Korean organization is the sole winner of four World Championships. Two of these four Summoner Cups were won consecutively, another significant feat. They are a top choice for betting on prestigious esports gambling platforms. The organization also holds 14 LCK (League of Legends Champions Korea) titles, all of which were won in a row. T1 has had up to a 26-win streak across some games and the prestigious Esports Team of the Year award in 2023. Several top players have contributed to T1, such as Faker and Duke.
G2Esport
This premier European organization has been dominating the LoL scene. They joined the EU League Championship Series (LCS), now the League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC). Their consistency puts them ahead of the curve, winning 14 of the 16 split finals they made it to. Their popularity skyrocketed when G2 bridged the gap between the eastern and western LoL teams, winning the MSI (Mid-Season Invitational). They remain the only European team to have achieved this feat.
The organization has participated in about 50 tournaments from 2015 to date, taking the first to third positions most of the time. Another significant achievement is the 14th League of Legends European Championships (LEC). G2 has some of the best players in the field, having won over 100 awards, including
- 1st All-Pro Team
- Team of the Split
- Rookie of the year
- MVP of the year
Gen.G
Generation Gaming is another South Korean organization dominating the League of Legends scene. It was previously known as Samsung Galaxy until it was acquired by KSV eSports in 2017. Gen.G is the first team to win the LCK titles in a row. They are also the only other team to hold multiple Summoner Cups, having won the World Championships in 2014 and 2017. These wins were recorded for the Samsung Franchise; Samsung White won in 2014, after beating its sister team, Samsung Blue, in the semi-finals. In 2017, Samsung Galaxy (merged White and Blue) won the trophy. Gen.G is yet to win an international title, but their consistency could pay off this season.
EDward Gaming
Asia has produced some of the best League of Legends teams and in the existing competition within the region, China is the only one that can compete with Korea. EG from China takes a spot on our list with six (the highest) LPL titles since they joined the pro leagues in 2013. The team also holds three consecutive LPL split victories between 2014 and 2015. EDward Gaming won the Best Team title in China LoL of the Year Awards in 2015, 2016, and 2021. They were also nominated in 2014 and 2017. Another significant victory was their win of the first-ever MSI in 2015, beating SKT (SK Telecom T1).
Most of EG’s success counts as past glory, with the organization needing to restructure to be as competitive again internationally. Yet, they still dominate domestically. EDward Gaming’s most significant win remains the 2021 World Championship, which they won while playing all three full best-of-five series in the knockout stage.
Fnatic
This European organization began its foray into esports by acquiring myRevenge in 2011. It has since been one of the strongest teams, winning the first Riot Season 1 World Championship. It is the first organization to land 10,000 total kills in EU LCS & LEC history and has won 7 LECs. Fnatic is way past its glory days but remains the second top EU team after G2. They’ve also been to almost all the world Championships.
Team Liquid
In North America, Team Liquid takes the cake, dominating both the domestic and international scenes. They are the most successful organization in NA, having won five LCS splits since 2018. Many fans remember them for the 4-meme, finishing fourth or winning four games in tournaments. The curse of the four shone through in the 2019 LCS Summer Finals, where they won 4 trophies in a row. The NA curse was also there for the 2021 LCS Championship, where they beat TSM in 4 games and secured their fourth appearance at the World Championship. Team Liquid has no Summoner Cups, but has finished third at the World’s Group Stage, four times in a row. Their consistency has made them a top-pro organization. They even won the Spring 2024 Split, after strengthening their roster with formidable players. The 2024 season is looking up for this organization.
Cloud 9
This organization is equally famous in the NA LoL scene but has not been as present internationally. Cloud9 has been a driving force for the region, beginning with their debut season and a remarkable 25-3 record. They have won six LC Splits and been a runner-up seven times. They’ve also appeared in ten of the last eleven World Championships, finishing in the Top 8 most times. Compared to Team Liquid, they have gotten to the quarter-finals five times and the semi-finals once, in 2018, which remains the furthest any NA organization has gone.
League of Legend Warriors
Every season is different, and any team can win the Summoner Cup. Every team we’ve mentioned has got the galls, with hard training, consistency, and achievements to show for it. But don’t wedge your bets solely based on their previous winnings. Any team can usurp the previous titleholder. That’s the competition we adore in the League of Legends. Who are you betting on this season?
